So you have made the booking to join the thousands of people who choose an Ski in Italy break and are now praying for snow. Well before you hit the slopes here are a few things you might want to bear in mind.
Don’t forget your Euro and be aware the Italians do not have the same love affair with the credit card and you may need actual cash.
Family ski breaks are especially suited to Italy given the kids friendly food choices and the Italian love of children but be aware of the language problem. English is, in many cases, the third language after Italian and the local dialect. It only became so less than twenty years ago. Previously French was taught in schools in preference to English but fortunately Italians will happily throw their energy into explaining things using their hands.
For ski weekends you can always hire a car but remember, like most continentals, they drive on the other side of the road.
Ski in Italy offers a unique mix of ski, food and culture. Be prepared to find that Italians ski like they drive…fast with overtaking on blind summits and corners ! The lines at the ski lift may be chaotic as Italians are still adapting to the concept of queing.
Tipping in restaurants is not standard as a cover charge is normally included, it is however accepted gratefully.
Ski weekends can be combined with a trip to one of Italy’s northern cities such as Venice, Verona and Milan, an excellent way to get the most out of your ski holiday.
Some Italian resorts, like Montecampione, are used mainly at weekends by Italians so expect the slopes to yourself during the week.
In summary, Ski in Italy is a unique experience but take a phrasebook too !
