Recent figures show a downturn in the number of families taking family ski breaks. Partly due to the recession and partly due to an increase in school trips for skiing.
But family ski breaks are also a great way to spend time together in an ever more busy world where quality family time is at a premium. It is also a shared experience that increases the strength of family bonds and creates unforgettable memories.
Italian ski breaks are the exception to the rule in that numbers have remained steady for the number of families booking for the coming season.
Kids today are more independent and less inclined to prefer a family ski break over a school trip and older children are more inclined to go with youth groups or even on their own rather than spending time with mum and dad. Kids still prefer the week long ski holiday over ski weekend and snowboarding has increased as a percentage.
Whether we should lament the decline of family ski breaks is debatable but one thing is for sure. Tour operators are having to re-mix their offering of ski holidays to cater for a changing market.
