Secure Online Shopping - Autumn '09
Fraud, is a word with frightening connotations. It can happen when you are shopping on the high street or buying online, the good news is that for the most part online shopping is safe. Your details are more likely to get stolen in real life than online.
Most of us may be familiar with the do's and don'ts of shopping online but for those that are not, here are some tips for you to remember:
1. Only give your payment details over a secure connection, NEVER by email and NEVER disclose your pin number or send it over the Internet.
2. If you are browsing a secure site or on a secure webpage within a site (ie where you are entering payment details), the web page address should begin "https" rather than the normal "http".
3. You can also check for the small "padlock" icon usually displayed on the window frame of your browser. You should be able to double click on the padlock icon to display details of the site's security.
4. Know exactly who you are giving your money to when you buy online by seeking out the seller's land line telephone number and postal address. If in doubt give them a call, if they are genuine they should be happy and able to answer your security questions.
5. Be aware of the seller's terms and conditions regarding cancellation, delivery of tickets/goods etc and even keep a copy of these.
6. If a deal looks too good to be true it probably is, so do your research, look for genuine customer testimonials and reviews of the actual product or service.
7. Companies can change information on a website in a jiffy so always print out or save a copy of the product information for what you're buying, as well as your order confirmation page and any other confirmation information you receive.
8. Remember even if you buy online, you have the same rights as the high street shopper in relation to poorly described or faulty goods. Visit the Consumer Direct website for more information.
