Pisa is a popular tourist destination.  Most famous for the Leaning Tower, Pisa is filled with many artistic and architectural wonders.  A city of art and history, Pisa commemorates its traditions during the month of June with numerous folklore, festivals and religious events.

Pisa preserves, with the complex of Piazza dei Miracoli, cultural patrimony of all humanity - numerous masterpieces of civil and military architecture and of medieval history.

 

Location Information

 

Pisa is situated on the banks of the river Arno in North-West Tuscany, Italy.  Just 80km from Florence and 10km from the sea.

Pisa International Airport - Galileo Galilei has domestic and international air links. The airport is only 2km from the city centre. It is the main airport  of Tuscany and is served by several airlines operating hundreds of weekly flights to national and international destinations.  The terminal is directly connected to Pisa Railway Central Station.  Taxis are also available from the airport to the city centre.

Pisa has regular trains to and from Florence (usually three per hour), to and from Lucca (usually every hour) and is also accessible by bus for those wishing to see more of Italy.

1 - Tower of Pisa: The famous leaning tower - a remarkable bell tower of the Cathedral - has become the symbol of Pisa.

2 - Piazza dei Miracoli: Where the tower stands - there is also a Cathedral di San Zeno, Baptiestery and Monumental Cemetery(Composanto).

3- Roman Port at San Rossore: One of the most recent and important archaeological discoveries made to date - The ancient ships!

5 - Environmental Park of San Rossore: Covers 24,000 hectares along the coast- also known as an equestrian competition ground and among the most important breeding centres in Europe.

6 - Piazza dei Cavalieri: The old town square is thought to be the site of the Forum of Roman Pisa. In the centre is a fountain designed by Florentine architext Giorgio Vasari in 1562.

7 - Church of Santa Maria della Spina: The small church is a remarkable example of the Pisan Gothic style.  Built in 1230 on the banks of the river Arno.

8 - Guelph Tower of the old Citadel: The tall tower rises in one of the mose scenic areas of Pisa, the Old Citadel.  It's unique profile has attracted for centuries people visiting the town.

9 - National Church of St Stephens of the Knights: The Military Order of the Knights of St Stephen was founded in Pisa by Cosimo I de'Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany.  Construction on the church began in 1565.

10 - Teatro Verdi: The main centre for culture in the city.  It offers a busy schedule of activities. Ballet and theatre performances, pop and jazz concerts, opera, lectures and workshops are all held in this beautiful historical theatre.
