Obertauern is a modern development at the top of the Tauern pass road. The resort is well linked, with a user-friendly network of efficient modern lifts. Most pistes are on the sunny slopes to the north of the road and village. The slopes on the other side of the road are generally quieter and have some more difficult runs.
For Snowboarding, drag-lifts are optional and Blue Tomato is a specialist school. There is a fun park on the northern fringe of the area and there are 17km/11 miles of cross-country trails in the heart of the resort.
The resort has exceptional snow reliability because of its altitude. But lifts can be closed due to high winds.
There are genuinely steep black pistes for experts from the top Gamsleiten chair. Obertauern is ideal for intermediates skiers. The resort has very good nursery slopes, but they are spread around and beginners may have a long walk.
