The Palio takes place every year on the 2nd July (In honour of the Madonna of Provenzano) and on 16th August (in honour of the Virgin Mary’s Assumption).  Every year on these two days, the main square in Siena, Piazza del Campo is prepared for the race.  There is a ring created around the square which is covered with tuff clay.  There is a total of 17 Contrade’s that take part in the event.  A Contrade’s represent different areas in the city and they challenge each other in a passionate horse race.  This famous horse race has origins from the 6th century.

The Palio actually takes place over 4 days with the race taking place on the final day.    On the day of the event, thousands of visitors from all over the world arrive into Siena for the famous Siena Race. The event kicks off at 8.00 am with a mass for the horse jockeys in the chapel next to the Palazzo Comuale.  At 10.30 am within the Palazzo Comunale and in the presence of the Siena Mayor, the “segnatura dei fantini” takes place and the names of the jockeys are confirmed.

From 3.00 pm onwards each Contrada performs a benediction ceremony of its horse and then they all join in a large parade of historical costume, which winds through the city. The parade enters the Piazaa del Campo at around 5.00 pm and finishes around 7.00pm.  There is then a firecracker signalling the entrance of the horses and then the race can start.
